About Us

We are a group of surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals at the St. Paul's Colorectal Clinic who provide healthcare services to patients with colon and/or rectal dysfunction including cancer, polyps, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, diverticulitis, and all benign anorectal disease such as fissures, fistulas, rectal prolapse, hemorrhoids, and anal condyloma.

Our mission is to provide abdominal surgery patients with accessible information, tools, and support to enable them to effectively optimize their health prior to surgery.

We worked together with a Patient Advisory Group and other scientists at UBC to collaborate on a patient-oriented research study, led by Dr. Annalijn Conklin, to co-create this web-based patient information tool to support our patients in preparing for abdominal surgery. Our two clinicians on that team were Drs. Karimuddin and Brown.  We tested the new website with a small group of patients who reported a high level of satisfaction with the information, resources and usability. Our feasibility study (PREP) was funded by the BC SUPPORT Unit, and supported the Centre for Health Evaluation and Outcome Sciences (CHÉOS). That project built upon the results of an earlier qualitative study of patient experiences and preferences for preparing for colorectal surgery (also led by our collaborator, Dr. Conklin) which found an unmet need for more structured pre-surgery support. We built this website to be flexible and presented with non-medical information based on the results of those focus groups so that our patients can make informed decisions about their pre-surgery care and surgical outcomes.
